Throughout my time as a fan of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, I have witnessed lots of success, failure, and plenty of disappointment within the games. Though the series has never personally let me down as a fan, and I might be biased, but there is not one game in the series that has impacted me more than Assassin’s Creed Rogue. It may be a pure copy and paste of Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag’s mechanics, naval conflict, and fighting combat, but the great story and the disrespect the game has received is what has moved me.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue felt like it was just supposed to be a game to help pass the time until people were fortunate enough to upgrade to the “next-gen” consoles and pick up a copy of Assassin’s Creed Unity. But Ubisoft and the fans of the franchise knew it was more than that. What bothers me more than anything is seeing the way other video game fans have forgotten about the existence of Assassin’s Creed Rogue. It seems only fans of the AC series really only remember it. I feel this game is underrated by people who believe the game is too short compared to other games in the franchise. However despite these beliefs the fact that Rouge had a great plot and the revolutionary idea of telling the story of an Assassin’s Creed game from a perspective of a Templar means this game should be given much more credit for its originality, which sets it aside from some of the other more assassin led games, this game also ended the era of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games on a high note.

There was lots of criticism of Assassin's Creed Unity at the time of its release, and rightfully so. The game was rushed and many felt it was not ready for release at the time it was scheduled to come out. The game was filled with game-changing bugs and glitches. It was unplayable at the time. People were so focused on the current failure of Unity that nobody bothered to look at Rogue and see a more balanced and polished game at the time of its release. In 2014, I was very disappointed in the current state of the franchise. It was hard to read all the negative feedback from the community. The series I loved so much was being torn apart by fans and fellow gamers. It was a sad time to be an Assassin’s Creed fan. At the time, the story and importance of Rogue was forgotten to some, but to others, it was not.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue took us back to North America during the mid-1700’s. We sailed the seas as Shay Patrick Cormac, a former Assassin turned Templar. Shay had to eliminate all of his former colleagues, even those he was close with. The game served as a prequel bridge to Assassin’s Creed Unity, as you can see towards the final scenes in Paris. It was a great surprise to see that it had a connection with Unity.

Thankfully in 2018, Ubisoft decided to release a remastered version of Assassin’s Creed Rogue. It helped grow its existence into a rather popular game. Fans who did not bother to give Rogue a chance in 2014, finally gave the game respect nearly four years later. At last, it was feeling like Rogue was rightfully known as a real game and not as a forgotten piece of history. The respect the game received after its remaster was great to see. Though I still believe that it is underappreciated, Rogue was still one of my favorites and should always be remembered as a game that helped bring the community together after the rocky start to Assassin’s Creed Unity.

When Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was released in October 2018, it was met with great reviews and overall positive feedback. The game received praise for its storyline and visuals while some fans were torn apart by the fact that it did not represent its name. The game takes place in the Peloponnesian War in Ancient Greece. The Assassin’s Brotherhood was created during the events of 2017’s Assassin’s Creed Origins, which took place in Ancient Egypt many years after the events of Odyssey. So Odyssey could not accurately have an Assassin storyline, given the Brotherhood did not exist yet. Many fans could not imagine an Assassin’s Creed game without Assassins. In my opinion, Odyssey pulled off this challenge and delivered one of the more entertaining Assassin’s Creed games to this day.

I think Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is great because it knew exactly what kind of game it was. It did not try to be a picture perfect Assassin’s Creed game, but tried  to give a different approach to the series. Ubisoft knew that pulling off an Assassin’s Creed game without Assassins was going to be difficult, and they also knew some people would not like the idea, therefore It was bold move on the part of the assassins creed development team  to try to make something a little different. Odyssey did a great job not always using the “revenge” story line for its main plot, It was smart to step away from the idea and use creativity to be more original. this originality saw the use of a story line focusing on bringing your family back together which was a brilliant idea that added a much needed change to the franchise.

Some fans still disagree with the Assassin’s Creed franchise evolving into an RPG format. It is understandable to see this controversy, as the style is clearly not for everyone. However I like the change in the franchise and beleive the series was in desperate need of a reboot or a revival of some kind around early 2016 and Ubisoft knew this. The franchise took a whole year off in 2016, something they had not done since the two year gap between the original Assassin’s Creed game in 2007 and 2009’s Assassin’s Creed 2. Taking a break was a risky but smart decision for the franchise. When Assassin’s Creed Origins was released in 2017, the world was surprised to see the newly added RPG format. It was a complete makeover of the franchise. Odyssey followed the same format and was very similar to Origins with combat, mechanics, stealth, and many more similarities. Some fans thought Odyssey was just a copy and paste Origins, but in reality, Odyssey was unique in its own way.

Odyssey not only gave the series a new look, but also helped set the franchise on a good track. It’s sales and reception proved that. At first, I was not enthusiastic about the introduction of  RPG format into the AC franchise, but I have grown to love it. Something different is not always bad. Odyssey proved that being different is something you can thrive on. I’m very excited to see what the next major installment in the franchise will look like.
